Chicago The Musical - Review at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford, Kent.

Chicago The Musical is set in the 1920’s and based on a true story, which was originally written by the journalist, Maurine Watkins, who published interviews with the women, who are now known as the play’s main characters ‘Roxy Hart’ & ‘Velma Kelly’, which makes this wonderful story even more fascinating!

Chicago The Musical is about glamourous women, committing murder, being caught and facing hanging for their crimes, but their style, beauty and seduction manages to set them free. To Maurine this became very obvious and in mid-1920’s a Chicago newspaper ran a headline which says “Pretty Girls Get Free, Ugly Ones Sent To Pen”.

Chicago The Musical was a hit in Broadway, back in 1926 and has since toured the world, it has also had two film adaptations, so you can pretty much guarantee, going to see this show is going to be well worth your time!

It is not a show for children, but very much suitable for a date night or girls night out. The music is raunchy, the clothing is minimal, there are many references to sex and violence, but it is all brought together brilliantly by light hearted, jazzy music, most of the stories of murder are told through comedic song and of course dance.

Starring Russell Watson as Billy Flynn, Sheila Ferguson as Mama Morton, Faye Brooks as Roxie Hart, Djalenga Scott as Velma Kelly, the four of these were just outstanding, they really brought the characters to life and their performances were absolutely stunning.

We would absolutely recommend you go see this show, it is an old-time classic and just the fact it has been on stage for nearly a century says it all, even the band which you watched perform as a backdrop to the scene were incredible. So much so, people didn’t want to leave the auditorium at the end of the night as they danced to the extended tunes. …This show really cannot be missed!

Simple, sexy and sensational! Chicago strips it back to basics, no fancy set or costumes, just pure talent, telling their murderous tales, through sultry song and dance
