Heathers The Musical Review

‘Heathers The Musical’ is a dark and thrilling stage production, that is based on the popular 80’s cult classic, comedy film of the same name. The show follows the story of Veronica Sawyer, a high school student who seeks to climb the social ladder by befriending the Heathers, a group of popular girls at her school. However, things take a dark turn when Veronica finds herself caught up in a series of events that are both hilarious and chilling and thanks to her own self-doubts, becomes entangled in a string of murders caused by her boyfriend, J.D.

The musical explores dark themes such as teenage insecurities, suicide, murder, and bullying. ‘Heathers the Musical’ is known for its catchy songs, witty dialogue and comedic moments. Its cult following has made it a popular choice for high schools and theatre groups, and its themes resonate with audiences of all ages.

As a lover of the 80’s and also musicals, ‘Heathers The Musical’ is well worth seeing and was certainly a hit with the older teenagers in the house. bringing all the dark humour and biting satire of the original film to the stage in a fresh, unpredictable way, I think the characters inner-feelings and emotions resonated well with a lot of the audience. This show makes you think hard about the under-lying message, but is brought home in a fun, musical, entertaining way.

What really sets ‘Heathers The Musical’ apart is its brilliant cast. The chemistry between the leads made for a dynamic and engaging show, which is impossible to turn away from.

Jenna Innes absolutely nailed the angsty attitude of Veronica Sawyer, while Jacob Fowler as J.D. was equal parts charming and terrifying. The Heather’s performances were outstanding, especially Verity Thompson and Alex Woodward, playing Kurt Kelly and Morgan Jackson who played Ram Sweeney both played their dim, stupid, funny, meat-head characters brilliantly!

Overall, ‘Heathers The Musical’ is a perfect blend of dark humor, incisive commentary, and killer tunes. Despite some controversial themes and sexual references, the show is a must-see for anyone who is a fan of musical theatre and would like to show their older teens it is very much more than ok to always be yourself!
