How I Stop My Child Coughing at Night.
How Can I Help My Child Sleep with a Cough and Cold?
I have had endless nights over the years, just awake, listening to my children tossing & turning, struggling to sleep well because they have a rotten cold and are congested, leaving their nosed blocked up and finding it difficult to breathe at night. Until around 10 years ago, when I somehow found out about this old wives tail and I thought I would give it a go. Since then, if any of us are congested I make sure this is the last thing we do, just before we go to sleep … AND IT ONLY FLIPPING WORKS!!!
The first thing I do before lights out, is prop up the kids mattress slightly, under the head end, so I pop one of our pillows under the mattress. You don't want to make it too high in case the poor child rolls off, but enough to keep your little one's head up a little, so that the snot drains down the throat and not just sit at the back of the head / nose / throat, which causes more blocking.
Now, this is the best bit … I rub Vicks Vapour Rub all over the soles of my child's feet, under and on their toes, on the heel, everywhere, then I put a pair of socks on them and VOILA! A SLEEPING, SETTLED CHILD!!!
I don't know why it works, I don't know how it works and I don't really give a monkey how it works! What I do know is that my kids are NOT allergic to Vicks Vapour Rub and it helps them get the rest they need when they are poorly, so I don't care! I do also rub the vapour on their chest and in between their shoulder blades, but for some reason it is their feet that is the reason on why it works. It works for us so well, that I have even used it myself when I have a cold. If I am blocked up, I go to bed with this unpleasant smelling stuff on my feet, add a pair of highly unattractive fluffy socks and off I sleep all night. Love the stuff!
Now, I don't know if you have ever had Reflexology before, I have many times, you have many pressure points on your feet that reflect parts of your body, the menthol somehow stimulates the pressure points and helps heal infected areas within your body. I have had a very bad back over the years, when it gets too much I have used Vicks Vapour Rub and concentrate particularly on the areas of the feet that reflect my spine. I'll use it for four - five nights in a row and in the mornings my back feels a lot better for it. I think it relaxes the muscles somehow, so I would even recommend giving it a go for that reason too.
Now, I need to say, I am not a Doctor, I am not a medical expert in any way, I am not affiliated with the brand and I don't even know if there are other brands available that does the same thing. I am just sharing with you what works for me and my kids and hope that there is some way it can help you too.
** PLEASE NOTE: Babies under a certain age are too young to have Vicks Vapour Rub applied to their body, but supermarkets and pharmacies sell mild versions which are very suitable for use on younger ones. You also need to ensure that either the baby vapour rub or Vicks Vapour rub DOES NOT cause any reactions by doing a tiny patch test at least 48 hours before you use it further.**
Vicks Vapour Rub Remedies.
Apparently, there are many other ways in which Vicks Vapour Rub can be used for remedies and I was going to add them to this blog, but as I haven't tried them out myself I don't feel I can comment. However, if you Google 'Uses for Vicks Vapour Rub' you can find many answers, like insect repellent, foot fungus remedy, helps acne and all sorts, so well worth a look.
I personally think Vicks Vapour Rub & Baby menthol rub is amazing and it makes sense that it
helps your body when used on the soles of your feet, it has helped my family over the years, so really wanted to share this with you.
I really hope this helps with settling your little ones at night when they are feeling poorly and if you have tried it I would love to know what your thoughts are about it. I am also really keen to find out if you too have had any experience of using Vicks Vapour Rub within your family as any healing remedies, or what else you know it could help with, so if you have any experience, please tell us below in the comments so we can help other families too!
